Fort Myers, Florida — Khawaja Jawaid Ahmed, a media professional originally based in Karachi and Sukkur, Sindh, Pakistan, and currently in Fort Myers, Florida, conducted a special interview with Mr. Kevin B. Anderson, who was sworn in as the 62nd Mayor of Fort Myers in November 2020.
At the start of the interview, I asked Mayor Anderson about the city of Fort Myers and, in particular, the role and contributions of various Asian communities, including Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, and others. The mayor responded very positively, noting that he has attended many of their cultural events and always enjoyed interacting with members of these communities. He expressed appreciation for their respect for American cultural values and their positive engagement with the wider community.
When asked about his academic background and professional career, Mayor Anderson shared that he completed his education at Edison Community College and Florida Gulf Coast University. He went on to serve for 24 years with the Fort Myers Police Department, retiring with the rank of Major. In addition, he served in the United States Army for three years.
During the interview, which took place in his office at City Hall and lasted about an hour, the mayor appeared energetic, well-informed, and fully in command of the city’s affairs. He spoke in detail about ongoing efforts to improve civic conditions in Fort Myers. Addressing a question about future priorities, Mayor Anderson emphasized that a major focus of the city is investment in clean and healthy water resources to ensure a thriving future.
“Water touches every aspect of our lives,” he said, noting that National Water Quality Month in August serves as a reminder that water is not merely a utility service but a critical component of the economy, public health, and the environment. He explained that the city is making a strong commitment to protect its water resources and revealed plans to invest nearly one billion dollars over the next ten years to improve and expand potable water, wastewater, and reclaimed water systems.
In response to another question, Mayor Anderson explained that he serves on the Florida League of Mayors Board of Directors, the Florida League of Mayors Veterans Affairs Committee, and is an active member of both the Florida League of Cities and the Southwest Florida League of Cities. He also serves with the Lee County Public Schools Foundation and America’s First Mayor’s Council. Additionally, he is a mentor in the foundation’s “Take Stock in Children” program, which provides educational opportunities for deserving low-income youth to help them break the cycle of poverty. Mayor Anderson has received several honors for his distinguished performance during the years 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.
During the discussion, it was also noted that the City of Fort Myers was incorporated in 1886 and is located in Southwest Florida. I shared my own impressions with the mayor, telling him that during my four-and-a-half-month stay in Fort Myers, I was both surprised and delighted by how responsibly people in Florida and elsewhere preserve their historical values and cultural heritage. I added that Fort Myers reflects a diverse culture and a charming lifestyle, with a vibrant downtown featuring landscaped areas, restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries that offer enjoyment both day and night. Fort Myers also maintains sister-city agreements with Gomel in Belarus and Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic.
As the interview concluded, Mayor Anderson kindly presented me with city collar pins as mementos. In return, I presented him with traditional gifts from Sindh: a Sindhi cap and an ajrak, symbols of a civilization more than 5,000 years old. The ajrak was draped over his shoulders and the cap placed on his head as a mark of honor. The mayor warmly expressed that I would always be welcome whenever I visit the United States again.
I am especially grateful to my loving daughter, Ms. Rida Ahmed, for arranging and managing this memorable interview with Mayor Kevin B. Anderson.
